4 Digit 8-Segment Display - 0.56", Common Cathode, Red

  • 1 for $2.95

  • 10pcs for $24.95

This is an 8-segment display (it has decimal points in addition to the 7 segments, but some people call it a "7-segment display" either way) with a 0.56" character height in red. The LED's are connected in a common cathode configuration, so you can turn on a digit (there are 4 digit pins) by pulling a single pin to ground (typically with an NPN transistor), then there are 8 other pins that control the segments. These are high quality and will plug directly into a standard breadboard.

If you're not familiar with how displays work, you may be asking why there aren't enough pins to control each digit. This would require a lot of pins and wires/pcb traces to make it work. The solution is to only light up one digit at a time so that each one is on for 1/4 of the time. Do this very fast (>60Hz) and it will look good to the human eye. This is called multiplexing, and makes for a fantastic intermediate electronics project.
